Don’t Sleep on this Crucial Body System

There is a system in the body that is actually a part of the Circulatory System & the Immune System and without it, life would be very difficult to sustain. This unsung hero is the Lymphatic System. It’s made up of a network of very small vessels that channel lymph fluid from all over the body. There are multiple parts of this system, the major parts of the lymph tissue are located in the bone marrow, spleen, thymus gland, lymph nodes, and the tonsils. Lymphatic tissue is also found in the heart, lungs, intestines, liver, and skin. This system carries oxygen, nutrients and hormones to the cells, it removes toxic waste, the immune component attacks microbes and sends signals in the body to make white blood cells and create antibodies and so on, and last, it’s very important to our fluid balance.

What would happen if the lymphatic system didn’t function at all?

The lymphatic system is crucial because water, proteins, and other substances are constantly leaking out of the small blood capillaries into the surrounding body tissues. If the lymphatic system didn’t drain the excess fluid, there would be a build up in the tissues of the lymph fluid causing the tissues to swell as seen below.

Let’s take a look at this video by Dr. Mandell regarding the lymphatic system and just how massage helps to stimulate the function of it. This is just a small example of how it can be used in the head, neck and face but can actually influence the whole body and help to facilitate healing of all sorts of disease, chronic and acute.

Corona Virus Prevention for All & Effect on People of Color

First of all, let’s deal with that myth that was declared by several, “People of color can’t get the Corona Virus because we have melanin.”

I don’t think I need to say any more about that one.  The numbers speak for themselves.  I know as African-Americans especially, we don’t have a huge amount of trust for the healthcare system, considering our history with those that make up the majority of healthcare workers, i.e. those of Caucasian descent.  We make up a fewer percentage of the population but are dying from the virus at an alarming rate.  This video will explain why and steps that a few are taking on their own to not only identify those at higher risk but more importantly point out the need for more resources for those at higher risk.

What can we all do to help prevent the spread?

  • Keep your hands away from your face and keep your hands clean!!!  Wear disposable gloves and/or use alcohol to disinfect your hands.
  • Keep a tight circle of family and friends.  This is not the time to visit and mingle.  It has been especially difficult for our young people who are used to being out and about a lot.  I know first hand from experience with my teens and oldest son.  It is hard to convince healthy young people that they are putting themselves at risk and even if a person is immune to the virus, you can infect others unknowingly.  With a long incubation period (1-14 days but mostly 5 days), you can appear to be healthy, sharing it to all those you come in contact with before you ever show any signs of being infected.
  • Know the common symptoms:  Cough, fever, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.  If you or anyone you know is experiencing these symptoms reach out for medical attention.  You may be asked a series of questions over the phone and told to stay home, isolate yourself from others as much as possible and self-medicate with a number of things.  DO NOT USE NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Motrin, Advil, Ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen/Naprosyn or any other OTC or prescription NSAID.  Tylenol (acetaminophen) has been recommended for fever (temperature above 36-37° Centigrade or 98-100° Fahrenheit).
  • Wear a mask or cover your nose and mouth when you have to be outside of your home or when exposed to others outside of your close-knit circle that you have already been around.  Our tight-knit circles must understand that if everyone isn’t heeding to this instruction, they will inevitably bring the virus back into our homes.  Go out, get what you need or get some sun momentarily and when you return, wash your hands or dispose of your gloves and disposable mask.  If you have a cloth mask, wash and dry it.
  • Keep your home clean.  Disinfectant spray works great to clean hard surfaces.  If you are an essential worker, keep your work area clean and use disinfectant spray after someone comes into your area.  You can also invest in disposable disinfectant wipes for cleaning.
  • Cut down on delivery of food from outside sources as much as possible….of course this increases your risk of exposure.   Go old school and actually COOK AT HOME—-no brainer.
  • Thoroughly wash/disinfect what enters into your home.  Not saying to go crazy about it but do the best you can.
  • BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM BY EATING HEALTHY!!!

Most of you know that this is already near and dear to my heart.  We must go back to nature and use what the Heavenly Father put on this earth for healing.  Typically the Elderly and those with a chronic illness or immunocompromised state have been most at risk.  These are some foods, herbs, vitamins or minerals that have been shown to boost the immune system.  Find something that suits you and begin to use it:

    • Vitamin C (check out this resource for foods high in vitamin C) Foods high in vitamin C
    • Fresh Garlic
    • Ginger Root
    • Tumeric
    • Spinach
    • Green Tea
    • Kiwi
    • Papaya
    • Almonds
    • Broccoli
    • Red Bell Peppers
    • Sunflower Seeds
