Broken lives, dreams shattered, discontinued birthday

Bad news, knock on the door, “Mam we have news to relay”

Someone’s son, father, wife, daughter

Sister, brother, can no longer comfort one another

Loved one, GONE, a generation goes no further

Precious children, gutted aspirations, never to graduate

Stolen time to ponder, contemplate on life, or reevaluate

Holocaust proven by history, can hate be innate?

SAY THEIR NAMES

He is not happy with the bloodshed, innocent souls cry out

Those with bloody hands, punishment coming, no doubt

Prayers for perseverance, let justice swiftly come about

Let the fallen never be forgotten. Β Let their families be comforted. Β Let us see the day where we don’t have to say another name

As many of you may know, there has been an enormous amount of injustice done and still being done to African Americans in the U.S. on many levels; just to name one, the criminal justice system. Β As an African descendant that was born in America, the injustices that I see on a daily basis hurt me very deeply. Β What hurts even more is the inability of others to be able toΒ have any empathy whatsoever. Β The following are words of reflection from this talented poet, writer and activist for justice regarding the game in which quarterback football player, Colin Kaepernick, for the San Francisco 49ers refused to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of what he sees as wrongdoings against African Americans in the U.S. Β Many citizens of the U.S. are beginning to understand that the mistreatment of African Americans boils down to a matter of not civil rights, but human rights. Β Bryan uses his poetic skills in a creative way in this poem to demonstrate just this point.
